Phytoplankton Cluster

Phytoplankton Clusters are a Flora species found sparsely in various areas but in large amounts in the Crater Edge. When using a Seamoth Water Sampling Scoop with a Seamoth, it allows the player to gather Phytoplankton Samples from them.

They are also toxic to players not inside a vehicle, but a Electrochemical Suit can negate this.

Appearance

Phytoplankton Clusters are mostly invisible, not being visible to the player unless a large, aggressive leviathan-class lifeform is in the nearby region. When one is nearby, they will glow a bright array of various shades of blues and pinks in the general area until the lifeform leaves. This is the only way the player can see the Phytoplankton Cluster.

Harvesting

The player can harvest Phytoplankton Samples from Phytoplankton Clusters using a Seamoth with a Seamoth Water Sampling Scoop upgrade. When the Seamoth has this upgrade and swims into the clusters, the storage area given by the upgrade on the left-front side of the Seamoth will generate Phytoplankton Samples. In terms of harvesting, the Crater Edge is the best place to find Phytoplankton Clusters, but only if a Ghost Leviathan spawns.

They cannot be planted or farmed.

Phytoplankton Cluster Entry.png

Rather than a single organism, this entity is a large cluster of migrating phytoplankton. Interestingly, it seems to possess the capability to detect minute movements in the surrounding water, and will emit light if sufficiently disturbed. This behavior not only can be used to detect the presence of such plankton blooms at a distance, but also as an early indication of more distant but large water movements, such as those created by swimming megafauna.

The plankton itself is slightly toxic, but these chemical defenses might make them useful for crafting purposes.
